Magic Between Worlds

$50.00 - $200.00

The first in my "Birth Stories" series, this lovely (large) piece is painted acrylic as a resist behind stain and gold paint.

Captured by Belle Verdiglione, this beautiful, unplanned, unassisted birth was attended by the doula and baby's father. Baby was born with a nuchal hand a "necklace" of cord as well! The relaxed and welcoming gestures of the hands embracing this baby earthside is what really "makes" this composition.

I've always been in awe of that moment just before baby is born, where they're held between worlds.

This Is Why

$20.00 - $150.00

This piece is meant to be a response to all those "Why on earth would you not get an epidural/give birth outside a hospital/choose a midwife/etc" comments.

Childbirth can be one of the most amazing, rewarding, heart-opening experiences.  A woman goes through the challenging yet euphoric journey of labor, works with her baby, and together they emerge as a new creation.  Oxytocin levels will never be higher for that mom and baby then at the moment of birth.  This is birth how it is meant to be.

A huge thank you to my doula clients and midwife Sarah Stone at Mountain Midwifery Center for allowing me to use their birth photos as reference!  It was such an honor to be at their birth.

Only a few left!

"Into These Hands" is for midwives, obstetricians, and baby catchers everywhere.  You can see mother's body blossoming like a lotus, swirling outward.  You also clearly see baby's fontanelles, or plates of baby's skull, as baby crowns.   The blue spiral starting at baby's head shows baby's internal and external rotation as he navigates the pelvis.  Hands, mom's or midwife's, are outstretched, ready to welcome baby earthside.

This mandala was inspired by a quote from a Rumi poem:

"And don't think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter.

It's quiet, but the roots are down there, riotous."

Flowing to Earth

Rage Against the Dying of the Light

14x18"

Pen and ink, watercolor, colored pencil

Form Is Ecstatic

There is a shimmering excitement in being sentient and shaped.

The caravan master sees his camels lost in it, nose to tail, as he himself is,

his friend, and the stranger coming toward them.

A gardener watches the sky break into song, cloud wobbly with what it is.

Bud, thorn, the same.

Wind, water, wandering this essential state.

Fire, ground, gone.

That's how it is with the outside.

Form is ecstatic. Now imagine the inner: soul, intelligence, the secret worlds!

And don't think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter.

It's quiet, but the roots are down there riotous.

If someone bumps you in the street,

don't be angry.

Everyone careens about in this surprise.

Respond in kind.

Let the knots untie, turbans be given away.

Someone drunk on this could drink a donkeyload a night.

Believer, unbeliever, cynic, lover, all combine in the spirit-form we are, but no one yet is awake like Shams.

-Rumi (from the book, Soul of Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks.)

Flowing to Earth

Especially now in 2017 when our environment is under serious threat we need to connect with the earth. Our bodies are a part of the earth. We get everything we need from Her. Our bodies become the earth. Our bodies grow and feed our children. We cannot separate ourselves from Her.

They Tried to Bury Us

$35.00 - $185.00

"I am not free while any woman is unfree, even if her chains look very different than my own."  ~Audre Lorde

This piece was inspired by a photograph I took of my daughter at the Women's March on January 21, 2017.  As a mother it is my job to teach my children that we can and MUST leave this world better than we found it.  That we must fight oppression, hatred, bigotry, racism, misogyny, and fear.  That we must welcome those who are desperate and hurting regardless of what country they come from.  That we must respect people of all races, creeds, genders, and sexual orientations.

I have never been more proud in my life than to march beside 200,000 men, women, and children that day, all pledging their commitment to this fight.  Denver was ablaze with love.

My sign bore the Audre Lorde quote above.  As an educated, middle class white woman I recognize my privilege and pledge to use it to alleviate suffering, fix what is broken in my country, listen, and hold space for others.

Wherever you are, unite and use whatever tools you have at your disposal to help make AMERICA COMPASSIONATE AGAIN!

About the Artist

Picture of Amy Haderer
Amy Haderer, fine artist and birth doula, began making mandalas to prepare for the home birth of her third daughter. Creating these pieces helped her envision and ultimately create her ideal birth, as well as meditate to prepare for labor. Since her daughter’s arrival the mandala project has broadened to draw from other parents’ experiences of parenthood, womanhood, and birth. Through her art she hopes to change the climate of birth from fear to empowerment and raise awareness surrounding disparity, mortality, and increase inclusivity in the broader birth community.

Amy is also the CEO and Founder of [M]otherboard Birth, a health tech company aimed at helping parents make informed decisions and bridging the communication gap between parents and their care team.

Amy lives in Denver with her amazing, supportive husband Paul and six beautiful children.
