"I am not free while any woman is unfree, even if her chains look very different than my own." ~Audre Lorde
This piece was inspired by a photograph I took of my daughter at the Women's March on January 21, 2017. As a mother it is my job to teach my children that we can and MUST leave this world better than we found it. That we must fight oppression, hatred, bigotry, racism, misogyny, and fear. That we must welcome those who are desperate and hurting regardless of what country they come from. That we must respect people of all races, creeds, genders, and sexual orientations.
I have never been more proud in my life than to march beside 200,000 men, women, and children that day, all pledging their commitment to this fight. Denver was ablaze with love.
My sign bore the Audre Lorde quote above. As an educated, middle class white woman I recognize my privilege and pledge to use it to alleviate suffering, fix what is broken in my country, listen, and hold space for others.
Wherever you are, unite and use whatever tools you have at your disposal to help make AMERICA COMPASSIONATE AGAIN!
