Original artwork measuring 3.75x3"
I created this piece while studying the Maiolica technique in Orvieto, Italy. Maiolica (pronounced my-AWL-ik-a) is an Italian-born technique using layers of tin white glaze over terracotta, then layering different oxides to create a painting The Italians loved the fine white china coming out of the east, but their clay was reddish brown. To make it white, they would dip the bisque fired pieces in a tin white glaze.
Traditional oxides include: manganese purple, copper green, cobalt blue, antimony yellow, and iron-oxide orange.
