In this piece I wanted to illustrate the process of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. The Labyrinth differs from a maze in that it only has one path in and one path out. This is a perfect metaphor for a journey inward towards birth and outwards as you process your birth experience. The wavelike pattern the path takes symbolizes the surges or contractions. I wanted to represent how the mother and baby's journeys are connected, both are experiencing the rolling surges, both are participating and moving closer to meeting one another. Their journeys are connected yet somewhat separate.
The piece is actually three dimensional. It is an original path labyrinth created by myself and you can physically take your finger, starting at the bottom, and trace the path all the way inwards toward the baby. The original is 30x30" modeling medium and oil paint on gessoboard.
