Winter Solstice - Crone
The fourth in the seasons of womanhood series, "Winter Solstice" is a piece about the beauty of old age. Mature womanhood, or the "crone," embodies the wisdom that comes from age. For this piece I was inspired hiking through a redwood grove. Redwoods are amazing organisms. They are actually a network of trees stemming from one ancestral, ancient parent who can easily be 2,000 years old and over 300 feet tall. As you can see in this piece the roots weave together and then come upwards towards the sky as newly sprouted trees. Redwoods are also amazing because their canopy can actually "catch" rain and make their own precipitation. They are extremely resistant to insects, fire, and rot.
In this piece you see the Grandmother calling deep into the earth, sharing her wisdom, and creating new life from her roots.
